sharing a few pics of our shop

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

Nice looking store. Much roomier and cleaner than I pictured a locksmith shop.

The few locksmiths i have seen were in desparate need of a vacuum and a trip to the scrapyard. Or, were mobile only.

Wow. Yet again I see I really, really had very little concept of the scope of locksmithing and the actual locks.

That is quite a key board. How many unique key blanks do you estimate you have?

Does anyone ever want bit or flat steel keys duplicated these days?

Well organized shop with very nice presence and presentation of professionalism for the customers.

We carry about 1700 individual key blank numbers. The least common blanks we will just carry 10-20. Most we keep a full hook which is 40 keys and a box in reserve. Some common keys we stock in 250 bulk boxes and those we generally keep between 2 and 4 boxes. There is quite an investment in key blanks alone. I didn't shoot photos of our stock area because it is too messy at the moment.

Not much call for bit keys in my area but in New England they are still common enough. Flat steel keys we cut all the time. One of my jobs yesterday was to drive to a hotel to cut replacement guard keys for their deposit boxes. They had broken their last one.

Thanks Gordon, we do our best. The part the customers can't see is a mess however.

That is the response we sometimes get when customers walk in. There are much nicer shops in our area but they have been established for much longer.

Each locksmith company will do certain jobs that other locksmiths don't. For example we don't do automotive work and very little residential work. We do a lot of access control, door replacement, storefront work etc.

I liked this and the " day in the life of a locksmith" thread. Interesting stuff.
