with early lock component failure I like to 'adjust' the strike on any lock that does not line up properly, when the door is closed. I use my DeWalt die grinder
and charge $10+ to remove whatever is blocking the bolt. This, is part of the instructions, if anyone bothered to actually look at them

I like using rotary files bits. Loud as heck but very effective and they last incredibly long. Not always my first choice but if I'm left with no other options, I chuck it up and turn her loose.

Years ago I bought a big pile of rotary file bits, they were army surplus and were well worth the few dollars I paid. I used them for years, until the day my Dad
retired. The next day I was no longer making $5 an hour, I was making gobs of money and for the next few years I was very busy, so saving a couple of minutes
and making my work look nice was well worth the cost of the two DeWalt DC 550 grinders I bought, one for each van. Only problem with them is the motor is epoxied in place inside
the housing and if you let it heat up, you'll need to take it apart and re-glue the piece of plastic junk. Other than that they have been in use over 10 years

Yep, they aren't cheap! (given)
I've installed a few of these...one for an AirBNB....
The owners can assign codes from 400 miles away! - yep, it's Internet coupled (with August Connect)
and you need a keypad for the codey thingy to worky....but, it's fantastic for a Rental!...
Getting the keypad, the lock and the August Connect all 'in line with talking' to their perspective parts...
a challenge!....
Look into the Yale lock with a keypad on the front....it's THE BOMB! (GREAT!)..
John

I'm not trying to sell you one, and it doesn't do anything to increase a lock's security level
All it does is enable someone to use their smart phone as a key. My client wants to rent out
his house and doesn't want the absence of keys to cause a problem. With this device he can
e-mail a program to the renter's smart phone that will unlock or lock his front door--No key needed

You might think it's a lousy waste of money, it is your client who will want it
also they aren't $300 any longer, the one I saw is $200 now[/quote]

This is the yale...

This is the kit to connect it to an August Connect (and it comes with one!)...

If 'The Internet' is out - the lock still operates with a code......
For some installations, it's very simply the way to go!
It does (on a phone) give you an audit trail - along with notifications of who just opened your door!

The problem with all this battery operated junk that I see every year in AZ is the owners invariably leave the house in the summer & turn off the thermostat. During that time the temperature rises, the batteries leak (or explode) and the inside of the 'smart lock' is ruined. Every year I have several clients ask me to take their no longer working 'smart locks' off, throw them in the trash and replace them with regular old-fashioned deadbolts. Believe it or not I don't work on electrical (apart from low voltage) and I don't work on newer car/transponder keys and yet there is plenty of work out there for me & the new competitor that had taken up residence in my town

I have one of these, and the key will always work. It literally only replaces the thumbturn on the inside with a motorized one. With the key from the outside, if turn perfectly normal.

Switchbot does this as well. They have several devices that work with their hub for your home as well. Scroll down a bit and one fits over and inside keyed mortise cylinder and literally turns the key when activated. They also have devices that attatch to the outside of a light switch and will flip the switch through your phone. Ive only used their thermometers with have been pretty good quality and tracks the data so you can graph the temperatures inside and outside your home with just a small device (about the size of a gms rim cylinder box).
