Magnetic stripe reader access

Postby BobbyZ » 21 Feb 2016 21:39

I know it's not a lock picking issue but recently we have been in the market for a setup to monitor access and help with accounting for who takes what etc.I really didnt think to look and post here but before I go and try and fabricate something I saw this and thought why not see what is available.

Now please dont try and talk me into a RFID system like everyone has so far because that would require the school to change its student ID's and that isnt going to happen. We're talking about 12 students in a aquaculture program loading fish feeders here and the University has no interest in changing things anytime soon.Idealy we'd like to see who logged in and when remotely but considering that the ponds are in a remote location I doubt this is going to be likely.

Thanks in advance

Why do they have to use their ID's? You can get a small stand alone prox (rfid) system and buy 12 fobs and give each person a fob to put on their keychain. Am I to understand that their current student ID's have magnetic stripes on the back and there are readers in place on campus to read those stripes such as food services, or library book check out, etc?

if the university is currently using magnetic track cards, they're already 20 years behind the curve, it would be in their best interest to get HID prox student ID's. The magnetic stuff is trivial to hack, forge, and copy, but that's beyond the scope of what you asked.

be it a magnetic card or a prox fob, what is the reader hooked up to? a gate? a door? a feeder? how do they currenly driver to / walk to the fish feeder area? is there a gate or a door? do the 12 student have a padlock or doorlock key they've been issued but you can't tell who used their key when and thus if something is damaged or missing, you can't figure out which of the 12 people with access to ask about it?

thanks for any pertinent details, and remember, you know the whole story, we're left to assume and or ask 20 questions to fill in blanks that are not known to us.

You could also use a stand alone combination lock with audit trail. Assign each student a pin.

Definitely more details...
If the access is thru a door there are many "smart" deadbolts on the market that can track user (via a different entry code) and log access times/dates and be remotely accessed with a smart phone. Maybe that is one possible solution?
