The first one looks kind of like a research project someone did a few years ago: http://vision.ucsd.edu/~blaxton/sneakey.htmlIt has been mentioned on this forum a few times before. I'm not sure if the code ever did get released though...

What I was Talking about was to allow a locksmith to tell what the cuts were, and maybe go so far as to show the key depth was worn and out of range of the Depth. It was a thought, Depth Gauges do the same thing, Seems you would have to have many of them to cover The many locks. This would reduce the volume of depth gauges?

If it works at distance, it should work up close as well. I've actually done a primitive version of this, where I needed to decode a key and didn't have any gauges or calipers with me at the moment. Took a close-up photo, went home and loaded it into photoshop, then used the measuring tool and basic ratio/proportion math to decode. Note though that if you're trying to find errors from factory spec, you really need a good caliper or micrometer. No software or key gauge is going to be anywhere near precise enough to tell you that.

Do you know the accuracy of measurements of a scanned photo(.015", 1/8", any idea? Thanks[/quote]

That would depend on the resolution/quality of the photo, which would be a product of the camera used and operator skill. I can snap a pic of a Kwikset key with my phone camera using pretty poor technique and fairly reliably decode it. My success rate is lower with higher quality locks, but it's still possible. Like I said though, I doubt you could use this technique to get good enough measurements to determine if a key is out from factory spec and what the magnitude of the errors are. At least, not without a high end camera in a controlled environment with mounting apparatus, etc. But if all you're looking to do is decode the key, you can get close enough. For example, if I snap a pic, upload to photoshop, and use the measuring tool, and I measure a depth of .322 on a Kwikset key, I can be reasonably sure that if I cut a coded 1 depth in that position on my new key, it'll probably work.

I believe My Turbo 2 has like a 21 Megapixel camera, And when I look at the detail of a QR code. Determining code appears easily Done by the Right person, Its not me. Would be a lot of work, but believe it would sell. I think it will happen, for now Its Gauges, Books and Calipers, Depth Keys and Code Machines?

Reason: changed youtube links to inline [youtube] videos for easier viewing, enabled BB Code in post.

Not sure why the links were deleted to 2 apps that read the codes from a photo, just want to say it has and is being done, sorry if it looked like I was advertising, or links aren't allowed? Not sure what I did, or I didn't load right.
