Lab .003 Mini... no top pins?

Postby Peter Martin » 10 Aug 2020 20:11

I have a relatively new Lab Mini .003 pin kit.
Schlage top pins are .165" and Kwikset is .180".
Neither is included in the kit. In fact, most standard top pin lengths are missing.
I presume I need to buy top pins separately?

Relatively new? The kit says "copyright 1978, 1985" on it .... I guess everything is relative!

Peter, not only the length, also the shape of the top pin is different. You need proper top pins to rekey locks in use. For training locks, everything is fine.

1d4, new may also mean not used... NOS.

Cheers :)

Hee hee... "old but unused" is a better description. I didn't even look at the date. I'm hoping not much has changed in terms of standard pins lengths since then... except some manufacturers are no longer in business.

I'll order some top pins for Schlage/Kwikset and some springs... and some "E" clips... and that nifty Weiser cap remover...

Go ahead and write in Kwikset #7 - .312 bottom. The lab kits don't mention the #7 pins, but give you space to write them in. They're out there and you'll encounter them.

So are the #7 cuts are primarily used in masterkeyed systems?

You can use bottom pins inverted with the point towards the spring for your top pins.. Use what is close to .165 and .180 and your good. No need for another kit...
