How to choose a course avoiding the rip offs

I took the Foley Belsaw course 3 years ago and it is good but I believe it could have been more up to date and be more indepth on some subjects. I have learned just as much in the field and as i did from the courses but without the courses I would have not had all the basics. If I had it to do over I would still pick Foley Belsaw. My advise is for you to sign up to recieve info on the the lock smith course and after a few months they will send you an offer for the courses for around 650-700 and then jump on that price. The key machine is good but not real fancy I use it for just flat steel keys.

If your in the states and want to go to a legit locksmith school hit up http://www.lsieducation.com. Im planning on taking several courses there to further my education as I have apprenticed as a locksmith and took a home course that was good for beginners http://www.assuredlocksmithtraining.com. I have been a practicing locksmith for the past 5 years and like that the lsi school has hands on training versus a home course. If you are in the military and are eligible for the post 911 gi bill LSI just recently got approved. Hope this helps anyone looking to get into the field.

I would like to see more apprenticeships being offered in the UK for locksmiths (there are none that I have seen) - on the job training as well as classroom based would be invaluable. Getting out there and dealing with customers face to face, seeing if you're cut out for opening someone's front door in real time, whilst they're peering over your shoulder.

It's really sad that if you want to learn the trade you have to fork out thousands of pounds on training courses and then have to fend for yourself.

The problem I found when I was looking for something like an apprenticeship, even after I had done a training course is that most businesses are family run, one man bands (who have no desire to help someone learn the trade and potentially steal business in the long run) or franchises.

Extremely frustrating.
