Pennsylvania Locksmith Certificate and State Laws ????

Postby Key 2 Success » 14 Aug 2013 9:34

Hello everyone. I come in need of any help in the right direction. I have read through the first 7 or so pages looking for answers. A simple search turned up empty also. So here we go. I am fairly knew to LS and cant seem to find a place that will have classes with all the certs. I will need to get on my feet. This is my main priority as of now. If there is any Locksmiths that are in the Philadelphia area can you please shed some light on me. My goal is to just work. If that fails then the next step i will take is trying it out on my own. I am pretty sure i will need some more light on this section to. Do i go to the courthouse and apply, demand, or bribe them for the proper I.D numbers and so forth? It would be great for me to get to the class first imo. Though i do like trial and error as i think i learn faster from the mistakes and experience. Thats besides the point. All help is welcomed and greatly appreciated. Even if you know a guy in PA that is legit and can tell his story on his begining stages. That is welcomed also. Thank you to all who respond or read this .

A quick Google search showed no license required for Penn. That doesn't mean you won't need a local ( (city, county, etc ) license. Check with your local government agency’s.

Tomcat a member here may be able to give you more specifics about licensing in your area.

Picking locks is a very small part of being a locksmith.
You will need to get some training / experience in actual locksmithing before you can see a payday.
There are several online classes that will give you the basics and get you a certification for minimal cost.

Take a look at this website http://www.sopl.us/ There are some free classes to get you started and tons of information about the industry.

In some cities like Harrisburg & Philadelphia you need a business license but not a locksmith license but in the entire state if you install locks on homes you need a Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractors Permit which is issued by the Attorney General of PA.

Here is the link for registering with the state

Hope this helps.
