New Pocket Pick by John Falle & Martin Newton

I realise this may not be for everyone but just wanted to show a new take on an EDC pocket pick.
This has been a bug bear of mine for many years as I have had a couple of situations where something like this would have been useful.

Probably like a lot of people, I have gone through Credit card Pick carry, Spy Pen, Jack knife etc., and always found them disappointing in performance.
Either too unstable, too bulky or very difficult to change pick profile whilst using.

John and I have discussed this a lot but never found the right time to ‘project’ until Covid. Over the past 12 months we believe we have produced a better solution. A self contained unit with 4 x progressive curved picks, with 2 x different size tension tools that feels & behaves like a standard pick when using it.

We have initially produced a limited run of which there are a couple of hundred left. We realise that we probably should have included a rake.
This is something that me be addressed on another run or. We may produce just a pick blade with a rake or two that can be changed by owners.

Aircraft grade aluminium body that is anodised, Sandvik (cemented carbide pick blades), Stainless steel rolled strip wire tension wrenches. Add to that assembly components, time and costs and neither John or I are getting rich off the back of this ! It has been done more as an obsession with finding a better answer to a problem.

Reminds me of a couple 3D printed pick bodies that were made for me by another member here. The pick retracts into the body, and there is a space for a tensioner as well. This looks far more sturdy and has space for more tensioners. Well done!

You are 2 Talented individuals, nice tool, but like to say, if 2 Tension tools could be catty-cornered and into tool body, so they don't catch in you pocket, would be nice.

And if you could make a half diamond, I'd pay extra to get one with the same quality to "upgrade" the pick set I ordered. I use both hooks and half diamonds, but the half diamonds are my go-to pick.

Thanks for the comments on this. To address them, the tension tools have been an issue. Originally we designed two tools that would sit with in the width of the pick body in an opposing configuration. We had samples produced both by chemical etching and laser cutting, they were then folded with a fly press and the ends were rounded. Unfortunately they were judged ‘not fit for purpose’ as they were distorting and so we went to the alternative of flattened rolled strip wire. These tools are strong but have to be square cut. They do fit in the tool in opposing directions and having carried one for the past 2 months on my car keys I am not finding it catching in my pocket. The representation is as per the picture of multiple picks above not as per the single pick. The picture of the single pick with the longer folded wrench was one that I had been using on a padlock with a defender shroud in front of it as we tested the pick on as many lock types as possible. I admit it is not perfect but it has been a compromise affected by costs, usability and function.
With regards to pick types we do hope to offer a selection of different blades in the future that can be changed out by owner/users. This will be a relative cheap solution for those who want different pick profiles such as rakes and diamonds. This is a way off in terms of time due to the need for costs recovery before further development.

Thanks for considering the Comments, that's how things get better. Some don't want to hear criticism, which hinders progress. I wonder if Dimples on inside of body could hold in the tension tools. I have, as many have given a lot of thought for a compact tool, Getting into Production is Something else.

Just wanted to give a big thank you to Mr. Falle and Mr. Newton for designing and creating this pick! Mine arrived today and after admiring it's design for a while, I decided to try it out and picked this Mako padlock in under 20 seconds. Very good feel, great feedback, and balance. Really smooth operation and it feels like a feather in your hand, lighter than a pencil.





I really like how one side has 2 pick profiles, and then you flip it over and there are 2 more pick profiles. Very clever design. If you like SPP, you'll like the variety of hooks included.
