Help choosing a Locksmith school

Postby Hoganator » 29 Jan 2007 4:06

I have read quite alot the last couple of weeks and I seem to have narrowed it down to two schools. The FB school which seems to be where alot of the people on this site have attended. The other is Assured. http://www.assuredlocksmithtraining.com/
Assured does seem to be more expensive but I can not find anyone on the differnt forums that has taken the course. I plan on registering for a course this week and I would value your feedback. Both offer the Key Machine. Both are affiliated with ALOA and B.B.B.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

In my opinion, and I'm fully prepared to be flamed for this, I wouldn't hire someone who's only training was a correspondence course like FB or that assurelocksmith course. You can get the same knowledge as the FB course by getting a library card... Don't get me wrong, its a start.... However, if you want a job as a locksmith, be prepared to pay the big bucks to travel to a professional institute where you can learn hands on.... And get feedback/advice and practical knowledge from people who do this job all day long.

ie:

or one of ALOA's different schools

Like I say, its a start, but unless you plan on starting up your own shop you may want to avoid correspondence courses. I know a lot of people here don't feel this way, but I'm just being honest on what I would look for in an employee. The more knowledge you bring to my shop, the less I have to spend time teaching you. Know what I mean?

Thanks for the reply.
I have no "real" schools close to me. The locksmith in our area is not prepaired to apprentice someone without having a no compete clause signed.( I don't blame him) I am prepared from the business and monitary end to start up my own business. I am trying to contact Locksmiths in nearby towns roughly 50 miles or so away. I don't mind the drive to learn. My goal is to have my own business. The only other Locksmith in my area has just bought the business from a retireing locksmith He is currently learning on the job. I live in a small vacation town that gets a ton of vacationers. I have hard that the lock out business is very good. My plan is to learn the automotive end first with the tourist season coming on, then the resid. / commerc. I currently am a stay at home Dad and have all the time in the world to study. I think
I can get through the course quickly.
Please keep the replies coming.
