Nice article for the beginners Jos!
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

They sell Vise Grips with smooth jaws for impressioning.

Nice tutorial.

A couple of things perhaps to add. Make sure the lock is free from lubricant. An oily lock will be harder to impression. I use brake cleaner to remove the oil. Also on padlocks such as Master or others where the cylinder is recessed a bit try and file down the raised shoulder it gives you a bit more vertical movement. Lastly the importance of clamping the key and lock tightly to avoid lost motion and I prefer to situate the lock so that the springs are at the top so gravity will compensate for weak springs that may mess you up.

Forgot about that one, Cledry. I had a Master lock that I fought for ages impressioning that should have taken five minutes. All because of a broken spring. Face the pins down, and the key would work. Face them any other direction, and it would not. So keep Cledry's tip in mind!

Excellent write up and I really like your Soma FM hoodie, I have the t-shirt myself! I'm a Soma FM supporter myself, they have a great selection of music, including a dedicated DEFCON and a Burning Man / Blackrock radio station stream.

If anyone wants to get into some new music, check out somafm.com

Thanks Jos!

A lot of great info here. If I may add one thing that helps me... If I am
having trouble seeing the markings on the blank key, I put a little bit of the liquid white out on top of the key and let it dry first. The pins will then leave the markings on the white out. Just be careful not to use too much as it could dirty up the lock
