Quickly determining the correct key blank for disc tumblers

Postby Jacob Morgan » 17 Dec 2016 13:31

Saw this idea in a podcast http://www.locksmithvideoschool.com/podcasts.htm

Now when I set out to impression a small lock, instead of pulling keys out of storage and trying out the likely looking ones, I have the more common blanks on a chain and I use to discover which blank fits then I go straight to one of those blanks. The chain came from the ceiling fan section in a home center. Cut it in half and the other half has the more common large keys on it.

The lock below that came from a Kennedy Machinist's chest uses an AP3. This gets the profile right, but not necessarily the length if it is a pin tumbler lock that used 5 or 6 pins.

Thinking about keeping this chain for the more common blanks, then making a second one with the less-common blanks I have.
