Practice locks??

Howdy!

I read that it was stupid to by practice locks, because there was a easier and cheaper way. He also wrote that you should do a search, and there was allot of topics about it.

Well, now i have searched and i could not find anything about it, so i'm asking:

Is there a cheap way to get practice locks

Most people just buy a standard 5-pin pin tumbler lock and remove all but two pins. Pick it. Add another. Pick it. Add another. When you get back up to 5 move the pins around. Try hard high/low combinations. That should do it.

Just to clarify, a practice lock could either be:

a) any lock that you "practice" on.
b) a cutaway lock designed to let you see the inner working while you pick.

If you are after (b), then you can either buy one (varj is selling one on varjeal.com or you can get on from lockpickshop.com) or make one if you are skilled like that. If you are skilled like that, I won't have to tell you how to make one.

If you are after (a), use your creativity. You can buy locks retail, buy them from ebay, work out a deal with a local locksmith for scrap locks, try and pilfer locks that will be discarded at gyms, pools, etc (mostly padlocks with cut shackles, but it's something). The list is limited only by your own creative forces.

"Stupid to buy practice locks" may just mean that cutaways tend to sell for exorbitant prices, and you can either make one yourself for much cheaper, or just stick with non-cutaways and use the pyramid method.

Ask around for padlocks for which all the keys have been lost, you might get many more this way than you would expect. I do! Also many people have padlocks that they don't used and don't need and will give them to you for a cup of coffee say.

As to "practice locks". All of us here buy many many locks in which to practice lockpicking on. If you are still having a tough time understanding lockpicking, or how a lock works, or you just think it would be cool to have a cutaway lock. Then you should buy, or make one. I personally own one, because it makes a good demonstration lock when your explaining to other people whom are curious how a lock works. Buying a cylinder, and making one with a dremel shouldn't be real hard, and will save you quite a bit of money as opposed to buying one from most websites that sell them. I on the other hand am lazy, and I bought one in the buy sell trade section of this forum for $25. Which I feel is a decent price, and I wouldn't pay a southord price of $40 or more.
