can somone name this method and help with this lock?

can somone name this method and help with this lock?

so i found a master padlock in the hallway yesterday and really want to use it but its locked and i dont have the combo

but i asked my freind alex and he did this thing where he would turn to each notch and pull up the silver arch until he got to a notch where it would move the pad face a littel bit, then he would right down the number, when he was done he got it open! but since's hes a jerk he locked again

when i try it, it wont work! can someone help me with this method

if you are talking about like a school hallway or something. dont mess with it, it isnt yours. otherwise, i believe you are looking at alot of work.

I found this neat little Palm Pilot applet on some freeware site once that detailed how to find one number of such a combination padlock by doing much the same procedure - turning the dial and pulling past the false contacts until you find the right one. The program then generates a list of combinations to try based on that last number. I don't have it anymore but I believe it is called SkelKey. Have fun! ~Grit.
