combo lock

Postby anthq » 25 Oct 2005 13:17

i have a combo lock (like this) that I want to crack...

i cracked a CLUB one like that , but i had a hint - someone scratched off the numbers on the back, so I knew how many digits for each one...then tried combonations of 1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25,28,31,35,37,40 - because you can be 1 off...

so i cracked the CLUB one, but im having trouble with this one...i know how the wheels work inside, but are there any tricks???

I'm sure you meant to clarify what (like this) meant. ;)

- get a stethoscope
oR
- a conderser acoustic guitar pickup w. amp..(headphones)

these will at least help you to hear anything thats going on in the lock really good.

also check out the vids on http://www.toool.nl, one of them discussed how to open up a combo-padlock via 'bypassing'.

Your lock looks similar to a Master Lock. There are methods which can be used to determine the combination by finding the third number, using sticking points, and doing simple calculations to come up with possible combinations. You can usually arrive at 100 or fewer possible combinations. Hopefully, you will not have to try all of them before hitting the correct one. Check out this thread and/or do a Google search for Master Lock combinations, picking Master Locks, etc.:

Just get a coke can and a pair of scissors and shim it.
I'm too lazy to crack them...

I have done it using a method rather like this though. Somewhere there's also a program you can put on a palm pilot that shows you all the possible combinations once you know the first number.

Oops. Third number. Not first. As I said, I don't crack them, I shim them. Image

A shim is a thin piece of metal you slide down along the shackle. It works on cheaper padlocks. You can make one by cutting apart a soda can using the thin aluminum. Look at the pictures below to get an idea for shape. Keep in mind, you'll probably wreck it in the process of using it, so they are disposable. Also, be careful with sharp edges!

electric pickup

Postby emm » 26 Oct 2005 16:31

electric guitar pickups (magnetic) wont work because:

magnetic pickups translate a fluctuation in the magnetic field (by a vibrating metal string) into fluctuation in current-->(amplifier)-->sound

and

piezzo/condenser pickups translate vibrations into fluctuation in current, which gets amplified to be an audible sound.

What the stethoscope does is what a trumet or old record players does too: it amplifies (through its acoustic design) a low amplitude (low volume) sound into a higher volume sound.

..btw..the two links of the last post could be good if we are preparing for WWIII
