Is it just me or

I just noticed that the longer I've been picking (3 yrs now) the less I want new tools and the more I want new locks. In fact, I never use half my picks. They seemed really cool when I got them, but it's just a couple of hooks and a rake or two for me now.

Anyone else like me?

Yup! Me too! I used to go though picks like they wer going out of style, now the same is true for locks.

I break a pick, sigh with the tone of 'oh well', and make a new one.

When I first started picking I only wanted a small set, because I didn't know how all the different rakes were used. So I learned how to pick, and gained some raking techniques with the few I had bought, and then I bought not a larger set, but more picks to add to my set, and more tension wrenches. Eventually though I settled on a couple of picks to use all the time, but I still find that I use all my tension wrenches, but use my twist flex the most.

Heh, i'm on the the boat as all of you guys... I only tend to use 1-2 different picks for door locks, and another 2 for pad locks. I also seem to use my twist flex torque wrench the most too. The rest of my 14 piece set seems to be a waste. Oh well maybe i'll find some use for them some day, but for now, i'm just stocking up on locks...

Falle-Safe owners are the exception to this: with as much as we paid for our picks, we have to use all of them (or try, at least ) otherwise we feel really dumb

i only have one factory made pick ( a half diamond) and about 2 other sweeper wire straight picks mainly cause i havent made any others or bought others. u don really need all that much at all.

I have many picks and i have been picking for about 5 years.

Ya, I agree on the picks. I use a couple of hooks and a couple or rakes. I made all my own picks, and 80 percent of them, I haven't used since a couple of days after I made them.

But I disagree on the wrenches.
I started out with various makeshift wrenches. One fit my practice Kwikset. One for my padlocks. One worked on my back door KIK lock.
Then I finally found some wiper inserts, and made some "standard" wrenches, which were ok, but I was definitely disappointed by them. In most padlocks, they get in the way and take away a good leverage point. So I tried wrenching from the top of the keyway, and I likey . Now I use just one wrench for all my locks.

I only have a hook and a rake, but thats just because it seemed like it would take forever to make a complete set.

I use my ghetto southord diamond and my peterson slender gem hook, in addition to my favorite two tension wrenches - one that's the south-ord "medium" style twisted one that is greate for sensitive stuff, and a straight-bent stainless wrench that I ground down to fit in smaller keyways, like some of those starting to show up on newer master padlocks.

I seem to load-up on bypass tools. I have a wide selection of rocker picks for auto work, shims, jigglers, straigt-knife type of tools that get'r'done quick, but always have the above picks as a fall back and for challenging myself. Don't forget SFIC tools too! ~Grit.
