I would definitely recommend having a locksmith come out and replace the ignition for you. Call around first and find out what company does automotive, and explain your situation. Where possible, get quotes from three companies and take the middle one.

The locksmith should show up on the job with all the parts in hand. Be aware that if your steering wheel has an air-bag your probably looking to get charged for about 1 to 1/2hrs labor for the r&r. (20minutes minimum required for the airbag capacitor to discharge before the wheel can be worked on).

The ignition shouldn't cost you more than $30-40 and make sure to get the lockie to cut an extra key for a spare.

That would almost for sure be an MRD ignition(magnetic resonance device), which is also called a PASSlock. We charge 48.50 for them, and that would be keyed to your key, so you do not need a second key for your truck. Most good locksmiths will key the new ignition to your old key. We would charge $35 for service call, $25 labor if drill is necessary, plus ignition. But cost of living is more in CA, so it will prolly be higher.

Most GM ignitions 96 and newer that are not vats or pats are MRD. It uses a magnet on the plug and has a hall effect sensor on the body of the lock. CSS or truck style ignitions(which are used in a few cars and all trucks) do not have a body so the plug slides into the column which contains the sensor. The car style that has a body are expensive, we charge $125. Anyways the idea is the sensor detects the magnet when you go to start the car and allows it to start. Theory says that any attempts to force ignition or drill, will probably destroy magnet or sensor, rendering the car immobile.

Oh yeah, there should never be any need to remove an airbag on a gm 10 cut.
