I got 13 picks. What do I use those other 12 for?

Postby possamai » 5 Feb 2004 19:23

Hi,

I just recently bought a pickset.
Pretty cool pickset I must say, 13 kinds of picks.. and 3 tension tools.
Now I use 1 tesion tool and 1 pick..
what on earth are those other picks for?
I know the one with the bold top is for locks that have pins on both sides, and the snakelike pick is said to be a rake tool..
But I have 5 snake-picks!
Are they all for the same purpose?

then there are picks with some really sharp hoogs, almost as sharp as a fishinh hook.. those are the ones I don't understand.. they almost can't be worked with because they are so thin that I'm afraid that I'll bend or break them if I use too much pressure..

Than there are some picks that look like the standard hookpick but with a flat head or thicker pointy head.. I use those just because sometimes they're easier to use than the standard hookpick..

I scanned my set and put it online.
I put some numbers on it to make it easier to point out particular things about a pick..

Thanx in advance!
And please be gentle, I'm a newbie on lockpicking...

1,2,3,5 These are broken key extractors. Not for picking, but for remoing stuff from keyways.

10, 12, 13 are nice hooks. 10 and 12 are Deforest picks, very nice as hooks for a variety of locks, but its really a personal preferecne thing.

THe rest are a variety of rakes, all used for raking.

Where did you buy this set, btw?

I think they sell that particular set at lockpickersmall.com

And the short version is that you use the rest of the picks for picking locks that yyou can't open with your favorite. Except the key extractors, you use those for cleaning keyways, and the ball pick, you use that to clean under your fingernails (and it's not even good at THAT).
