need "Tech" advice "Safe"

Postby Hollywood » 9 Feb 2004 19:39

hello
I was just given a safe it's made by
Acme safe Co
I'm guessing it's a mdl#9138

fire class B
type 2 hr
Burglary class B

it's dim's are roughly 3'4" tall x 2' x 2' 4 1/2" door Thick 6 bolts 3 eac side door

this safe had an additional safe installed welded on the inside
dim's aprox

11" x 11" x 1'3" combo

both combo's highest numbers go up to 100

I have both of the combo's for the safe
I'm just wondering how difficult it would be to "Re-Combo it"
and where may I find some info on doing this.

TIA

Can you determine from the dial what brand of lock you have installed on each door? Most if not all quality safe locks give some mechanism for changing the combination. Look on the ring/dial at the "opening index". Its the line you use to open the safe. Look to the left of that line. Do you see what could be another index a bit away from the opening index? If so, your lock may need a change key to change the combination. If you dont have the change key, you probably should call a safe technician to change the combos.

Has the S&G mechanical locks. Even though it includes combination changing instructions, I would suggest that you get a Safe Technician for the combo changes, and a good checkup on the safe. There may be small failures waiting to become big lockouts etc. Be nice, maby he or she will order a change key for you so you can do it yourself next time.

Yup. You'd be best to get a safe tech to change these for you. You'll need probably two different change keys (special tools to unlock the wheel packs) in order to do it. It's safer to get a safe tech to do it for you, and if they're friendly, ask 'em to show you how it's done.

Good luck. :)

thanks guys

As soon as I get a chance I'll do that.
Any idea of what the charge for this may be?

Varjeal,
I removed the inside door skin to the safe to look at the wheel packs
and its pretty cool to actuall see how everything operates.
I will post a picture for others that may want to see what the wheel packs look like

In my area, the charge for this kind of thing would probably be around 100-200 dollars, depending on what kind of maintinence is done. Generally 50 for the call out. But again, I live in NNJ, were everything is expensive.

would it be cheaper to just buy a new "combination" setup complete?

Ask your local locksmiht/ hunt around Ebay. The price I quoted was what I would expect in my area. See what kind of service will be given. Ie, will the tech just change your combination for you, or also inspect the boltworks and lubricate everything correctly? Personally, I would have no problem paying 200 for this kind of service from a good tech. Mechanical failure in a safe must be a real pain. Just weigh the cost of having your safe opened professionally versus maintinence.

Chucklz is right, and btw, getting a tech to service your safe will probably be just about the same as replacing the combination lock yourself.
