Lock that is re-pinable?

Postby Woofcat » 3 Feb 2006 0:18

I was wondering if anyone knows of a lock i can pick up at Canadian tire / Zellars(do they sell locks) / Wal-mart. That can be repinned with ease. I have never repinned anything since anything i have taken apart was with a hacksaw. This is becuase i only have worked with padlocks so far.

I will assume they sell some locks that are built to be repinned. Well any help would be great with this. Thanks alot.

You want a mortise or rim cylinder. You'll either need a plug follower or a means of removing the metal clip on top that holds the pins in. (this is easy on some locks and near impossible on others.)

On that exact lock to i need a plug follower or is there a way to remove this so called metal clip. Remember i have only ever worked on padlocks and locks that were already set in doors. I have never repinned anything or know the process.

Well if you haven't already seen it read my guide about repinning them in the FAQ, then you may want to take a look.

The rings can be removed with circlip removers, or even a tension wrench on most... I was recently shown a lock from Holland by Jordyh and the rings were IMPOSSIBLE to remove non-destructively. I doubt you'll see one of these though

It's pretty simple though, and should only take a few goes :)

Never, EVER, use a screwdriver and a hammer to remove the rings... and never, ever do it on top of your leg.

Made me laugh though  :P

Yet again another stupid question of mine.

Since i am newer to lockpicking. Does it matter how much i spend on this, Basicly will i get more out of the lock if i spend more money on it.

Ie:
$39.99 Lock in knob Schlage lock.
really big url

or something like this.
Yet another really bug url
I know its only $30 but i was just wondering if there was anything more that i would get out of it.

Canadian Tire is, unfortunately, a crappy site to link to. I'm sure others will be squawking about how the links don't work, but I got it sorted. Of the two you linked to, I'd recommend the first, but actually, I'd still rather see you get a Deadbolt than a KIK. Preferably, keyed on both sides. This way you get two cylinders for just a few dollars more. But Schlage is a good brand to work with.

Cheers!
