Tubular cam question

Postby SS454 » 7 Feb 2006 11:12

I have a couple tubular cam locks I pulled off a cheap safe.

I decided to give it a go. All I had was my usual half diamond, and a tension wrench. Basically, I tried to open it using the same method you would for a pin-tumbler.

And here's the weird thing. I did open it. It worked. But the fist time I got the cylinder to turn, it would only go about 45 degrees. And I had to pick it again, to get it to go the other 45.

And then, once it did, I noticed that I could no longer move many of the pins. They were stuck. I assumed that I broke it, so I decided it would make a good canidate for disection. This being my first tubular cam, I wanted to see how it worked.
Anyway, I'm still perplexed as to why this happened though. It seems that if it opened, then it must have been the proper way to open it. I wasn't aware there was more than one way.

Anybody know what I did wrong? :?
There's no replacement for displacement.

A tubular will relock every 1/7 (1/8?) of a turn, since after 1/8 of a turn pin#1 will now be on line with driver#2, pin2 with driver3, etc..etc..etc...

I don't know why it would end up jamming, although I hear talk of very short pins getting twisted in the keyway.
