What set to get?

Postby weldman » 18 Feb 2006 4:24

OK I'm new here and I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong place so if it is please move it and let me know.

I'm new to lock picking and am really just starting reading this site tonight and would like to just get this down not as a job but as a hobby in a way.

anyways, I would like suggestions on what is a good beginners basic set to get for picking the everyday house lock and all (pin type).

Yes. I think that's fine to start with. You would also like to check in http://www.lockpicks.com. There are a lot of good sets at the pick sets section. But to star I advise you to buy a little one and the cheaper possible because starters usualy break a lot of toools.

PS:The best option would be to make your own tools to start with, but I guess you don't know exactly how to do it so buy a little one... that one at amazon would be just fine.

Hooks and rakes, seems fine to me.
I'd advice some diamond picks too, but i guess you can allways buy/make those later.

Soutord 9 piece set has exceeded my expectations. The laminate handle fell off one of my picks about a week ago, but a small amount of superglue fized it.

If you're not willing to make your own picks to begin with, then I'd suggest the 9 piece set.

I just got my pick set in today

http://www.lockpicks.com/index.asp?Page ... ID=19&HS=1

this set is great...really sturdy and i finally picked that old fortress lock I had laying around

it has 5 pins and I could not get it with the paperclip rake

anyways I ended up using the half diamond on it and opened it in less than a minute.

I would say this is a good set for anyone just starting out who want to do lock picking for a hobby.

PXS-14 from SouthOrd. My first and favorite.

The jacknife set seems pretty good, but you could get it WAY cheaper by going to the southord website, and clicking the OUTLET tab. the same one is listed there for like 20-something, due to "minor cosmetic blemishes"

it really depends what you want to spend, if i were you i would start off with a small kit like 16 picks and work up from there
