Which locks to get?

Postby Dave568 » 27 Feb 2006 17:41

I was hoping I could get some information about which locks I should get in order to practice on. I am pretty much a beginner - I can rake well enough to open all of the locks I have in my house, but I want to practice single pin picking. I was hoping to get some locks off of ebay, but I was hoping someone could help me figure out which ones to buy. I don't want to start off by buying something too hard so that I can't open it ever, but I also don't want anything too simple. If anyone has any brands/models they would like to suggest, I'd really appreciate it.

It really does depend where you live and whats available, it pointless us suggesting a yale when all you can get is kwickset.

Fill out your profile as to place of posting and we can get more specific.

Basically all you need is a diamond pick (for raking), a hook rake (for pin by pin picking), a ball pick (for wafer locks), and a snake (raking i guess, but i never mastered it). Also a tension tool but thats obvious. those are the 4 basic tools

Edit from my post above:
Theres no specific brand i recommend, just search on google for lock picking tools. Although, i highly recommend getting tools with handles, as theyre more comfortable than the cheapest picks (which are usually one thin piece of metal (about 1/16inch thick). but get something with a thicker handle as its more comfortable

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I already have a pickset though, I'm just looking for suggestions on locks. As far as the person who replied telling me it's useless to suggest brands since I might not be able to get them... I am planning on buying them online, so that is not an issue. Thanks for any suggestions anyone may have.

Well in this case I would say Yale, or Era. I learnt to single pin pick on an Era, and believe it to be a fairly decent lock.
