Some torque wrench questions

Postby Isakill » 27 Feb 2006 14:23

OK... I've made a couple picks, and 4 different torque wrenches out of a winshield wiper insert from a 93 Merc Cougar.
My question is this... what would be the ideal width of the wrench head?
should I make all 4 of them of various widths? taper them?

I did a search and didn't see anything that may be of use.

Thanks :)

The wrench head just as to fit the lock and allow room for you to work with the pick. There's no ideal wrench width, it depends of the lock, just make some and try them on different tipes of locks, then you will get one width that suits you the most.
Hope I've been helpful. :P

By all means, if you have the time :)

I've scanned "mutterings from a mouse" extensively (awesome info there)
but I can't construct anything that elaborate yet.

The lock I have to practice with is a cylinder lock (possibly a 5-pin) with a key opening of 3/8ths of an inch (1cm)

and yeah CPLP, honestly your post was helpful. for some reason I was thinking there was some standard to these wrenches

Keep most of them the width the wiper insert already is unless its the wide version (over 5mm wide i think) make one 2mm thinner from one side and another tapered and youll be ok.

Make one with a twist in the handle so it bends a bit easier and you may want to make one thats double sided with one side only having a very short bend in it so you can tension on the top of the keyway.

The width as far as I can tell is 1/8th of an inch (3.175 mm) 1 mm thick.
I've tried it in a Brinks padlock and it seems way too wide. but if course I think my picks are too large as well.

I've followed a few posts and the Pyro Vid and made mine as best I could with the torch and twisting. With no cam worth using anymore I can't get a pic for you guys :(

Just grind your pics a bit more. Don't worry if they get too thin but remember... the thiner they are the easier it is to break so just be careful not to break them when you're picking the lock. :P
