Bump Key on Standard Cylinder Locks?

Postby Olcaytug » 31 Dec 2005 2:17

Since I'm out of my supplies to make lockpicks (I ruined 8 hacksaw blades since I'm a bit perfectionalist), I'm considering other methods (untill I go to buy some more blades...)

I'm curious about bumpkeys, but I won't risk damaging the high security lock at my front door. So I can only practice with standard pin-tumbler locks for now... Is it possible(or is it easy) to open these locks using a bumpkey... If not, I won't bother preparing a bumpkey.

Here is the picture of my practice lock (I bought it for 13USD):

As long as you've got a key with the same profile, I don't see a problem in making a bump key and bumping that lock.

Some things may be pick proof, but everything can be bypassed....

Yes a bumpkey will definitely work on this lock. They have a big selection of locks and you can find their website here.

hey man,....if the walmart or home depot key cutter dude can do more than "copy" a key, ask him to cut it to youre liking. tell him that grandma has a lock that is cut to 9999(9,9) and she needs a copy for the pool boy. A little BS goes a long way if you´re friendly. You are doing a favor for granny! Especially in the US where john q public don´t have a freakin clue about anything

Or ask for a key 9,9,8,7,9 (9) and then file down the 8 and 7. If they happen to know what a bump key is, it will appear less suspicious.

A little search on google will provide you with a couple of forums where people will make those keys for you. I got my set from a guy on this forum (won't say his name) and now I recently found out i can get a couple of more from a friend who works at a security company. I'd rather avoid finding just any key that fits in the keyhole and then filing it down to 9x9x9 positions. I have over 10 keys that fit the same lock but they spacing between each spike is different and so if you don't know the proper spacing for the key that would work in that lock you're going to have problems.. I sat there and wasted about 4 keys trying to bump a cheap lock that used to be my front door lock 20 years ago. Eventually I got so pissed I filed down the matching key for that lock and bumped it. (Obviously it worked.) I needed to do it... it was cheating but had I not I think I would have gone insane.
