How can I pick a 3 number combination lock?

Having read the FAQ's you are still unfulfilled and seek more enlightenment, so post your general lock picking questions here.

No need to be snippy.

Imagine a master combination lock with only 3 possibilties per wheel.
Factorial method:
3!=9
Multiplication
3*3*3=27
Now try listing the combinations

0-2-0     0-2-1     0-2-2

1-0-0     1-0-1     1-0-2
1-1-0     1-1-1     1-1-2
1-2-0     1-2-1     1-2-2

2-1-0     2-1-1     2-1-2
2-2-0     2-2-1     2-2-2

Count the number of combinations listed =27


Your factorial math was correctly done. 40! is indeed 8e47, but this is not the correct math to apply.[/code]

I didn't mean that to be a flame, just to provide a sense of the size of the number. Before you blindly crunch some numbers, you should always see if the magnitude of your answer is reasonable.

Hahaha i loved this thread. The plot twists and all. I wrote a guide on finding the combos to combination padlocks using manipulation technique aka "Battleship Technique". hmm...just that 8.73 X 10 to the # was alot of fun to read.

Why not? Number of particles and combinations for something do not really have to do something with each other, do they? I mean, a simple encryption key of 512bits already gives 1,3407807929942597099574024998206e+154 combinations. And a "military key" is 4096bits long...
