Squeeky pins.

Postby KottonKang » 31 Mar 2006 3:53

There is one kwikset lock im having trouble picking. It seems like when i try to pick one pin at a time with a hook, the pins sort of of get stuck. When no tension is applied and i bounce the pins they sound kind of squeeky and they have trouble going up smoothly... Kinda feels like a rusty spring or dirt in there?. The lock is also fairly old anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this sort of situation ?

Thanx Kottonkang

First thought that comes to mind is WD-40. It has solvent/lubricant qualities and should work fine.
It is far better to remain silent and be thought of as stupid, rather than opening your mouth and removing all possible doubt.

Yes, seems to me that you have a dirty lock. Clean it with wd-40 or grafite.

#1. Hose down lock with WD-40 (which does NOT have lubricating qualities)
#2. Run a key or pick in and out of the lock, wiping off between cycles.
#3. Do this for 10 or 15 min or until tool/key comes out clean.
#2. Let dry for a couple hours.
#3. Get a good silicon or teflon based spray lube and hose down the insides of the lock again, turn the lock so the pins are at the bottom to allow lubricant to soak through.
#4. Pick the lock.

If squeaking, roughness still occurs, disassemble lock and replace all springs.

Thanx for all the input. I sprayed the locks with wd-40 earlier just waiting for it to dry now. Ill keep you guys posted on the improvments, if any.
