Looking to pick my cheapie door lock.

Postby mrhappy » 10 Apr 2006 22:31

I was trying to pick my door lock and I seem to be having trouble with it. It isnt the standard pin lock. I think its a wafer or a disk. Its really cheap and the only reason i dont mind playing with it is that i have 2 extra in the closet. Any suggestions on how to pick this? Or where I can read up on it? I picked my first padlock yesterday and im all giddy to try something new.

It seems to have a spring in it so it will always go back to its original position.

Sorry if this seems like a totally newbie question but im a newbie :).

Anyway I took a pick of the front and back too.

what brand is the lock? looks like it could be a cheap quickset or weiser knock off - or the real thing for that matter... but I can prettymuch garuntee that it is a pin tumbler lock and not a disk wafer. even some of the cheapos have a security pin or two. you may want to do a little reading on "spool pins".

p.s. - I can't see the keyway in your pick, so I wanted to make sure you actually have a key for this lock. I mean, it's not just a privacy lock is it? It does have an actual key, right?

Took another picture a little better of the keyhole itself.

I can find no labeling anywhere exept on the side which reads Beaver. Go figure... i live in canada. It must be a canadian knock off. I will definetally look into spool pins, im just suprised on how easy the padlock was to pick in comparison to this. Maybe the tension is totally different or something.

Bummer i cant edit what my last post was. Anyway, yeah I'm sure its a knock off of some sort. It feels very cheaply made.

Its a Kwikset/Weiser knockoff. Its a knockoff of a cheap lock. Generally pretty easy to pick. I would suggest you are using too much tension.

What Chucklz said - ease up on your tension a bit, and if you want to cheat, look at the cut of the key - you might have a high setting pin behind one that sets shallow.

Ahh, you were right about one high pin being behind a really low one. I probably was torqueing a bit to much as well. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions.

If you have more in the closet, look at those keys and see if any is more forgiving for picking. The more "even" a key is the easier the pick will be. That is, try to find a lock witha bitting that minimizes the difference between individual cuts. Try to avoid keys with a high low high combination if possible.
