My brother and I picked up a safe at a flea market last weknd. At the time of purchase the seller demonstated that it worked fine which I guess it does. I have the combo and everything but for the life of me I cant get the thing open. I think I'm getting lost in the turns and what counts as a full rotation.
turn L 4X TO 7*
R 3X TO 3*
L 2X TO 4*
R 1X TO STP
We didnt notice until home that the guy wrote "stop". What does that mean in terms of number? Help!

Sorry dude Safe Cracking is for advanced forums. I believe this is an honest post, so to be certain it works, that the safe to a locksmith along with the combo, and as if he could give it a try, and if he gets it ask if hes a nice chum he wont charge..most likely will but if he's charging get him to change the combo to your choice

The R1X TO STOP just means that after dialing the last number, spin the dial right until it stops. When you do this, you are allowing the handle or lever to engage the boltwork. Try the combo and follow the directions and you will see that it makes sense.

These are dialing instrustions, well within the domain of the general forums.
Dial +4X CCW to the first number
CW past first number 3X, then continue to the second number
CCW past second number 2X, then continue to the third number
CW till the dial stops turning.

If you want a tip to help remember how to dial, there are 3 wheels and a drive cam. Every time you reverse direction, it takes a full rotation before the drive cam engages the wheel again. The first 4 picks up all the wheels and sets the one closest to you on the right position, first rotation of the reverse direction should spin freely, and then you should feel the drive cam pick up the first wheel. 2nd rotation you should feel the first wheel pick up the second wheel, and the third is taking the second wheel to the proper position. Reverse again, after the first rotation you should feel the first wheel get picked up, the next rotation is setting the first wheels position. Reverse again, rotate until the hook falls down and catches the drive cam and pulls back the bolt work.

Great, thank you. I had no idea you had to turn it until it stopped.

When rotating the dial, rotate slowly and smoothly, dont "jerk" the dial, or you could be setting yourself up for some expensive repairs. Its probably a good idea to have it serviced before you use it. A service call and some lubricant is way cheaper than a lockout.

I agree with Chucklz, my Pops hase a Big safe that it has not money but tax documents and diffrent important papers spare keys ect. It got jammed and he had a locksmith come out and open it.. i have no idea how i was still a litte young, hey lubricated it replaced some stuff and reset the combo to my dads choice. I dont rember all the details just my dad screaming after the locksmtih left with the bill for the lock out and other stuff.
