Cannot remove Kwikset bedroom doorknob w/lock

Postby NJRonbo » 19 Apr 2006 9:59

I am totally new to locksmith techniques so please excuse
the way I try to describe my problem.

Hoping you can help.

I am replacing a simple bedroom doorknob with lock. It is a Kwikset.

I am replacing it because the key to the lock broke - I have no other - so I just bought a new doorknob with lock.

The problem is removing the old doorknob. The door bolt/latch is locked into place so it will not retract when turning the door handle -- no matter how many times I adjust the inside doorknob lock/unlock knob.

How do I get the latch to retrack so I can remove the rest of the doorknob assembly?

The door bolt has a thinner bolt attatched to it that looks like it could
simply be pushed in, but can't.

Thanks for the help!

Is the key broke off in the lock?

And, can you get to the side of the doorknob that has the two screws that attach it to the door?

Actually, I broke the lock using a hammer and screwdriver.

Thank You anyway!

OK, after re-reading your post a couple of times I'm assuming you can get to the inside knob, since you've been trying to "adjust" it.

In that case:

Pop off the knob so you can get to the two screws easily. There should be a small slot to stick in a small scredriver to remove the knob. Then you remove the two screws and remove the inside knob. Next, knock the outside knob on through which will leave only the bolt in the door. You can then take a larger screwdriver and manipulate the bolt with the screwdriver by prying the thin moveable piece that you see in the opposite direction of the door jamb. You should be able to understand which piece to move to retract the bolt by looking or comparing to the bolt in your new lock package.
