Spools

I have picked many five pin deadbolts and padlocks without any security pins so I thought that i would take a crack at spools. I bought a brinks padlock that was advertised as having spools. I am using light tension and pushing up on the spools hard but i just can't seem to get them set. Any suggestions?

Dam you shouldnt have got the brinks its really hard.

But anyway,

If you do happen to false set a spool it will make the plug turn clock wise ALOT!

After this even know you set the other pins that 1 false set does everything it wont open the lock cuase of that one flase set.

Push up one pin at a time and if the plug goes anti clockwise thats cause youv'e hit the Spool pin when its in a false set.

This is called Negative plug rotation i think its pin but it just causes the plug to turnt he other way.

Get a kwikset which is UK's Bird cuase there so easy,

Repin the lock with 2 spools because Brinks is a good make and you mite not feel what spools feel like on a hard lock.

i already have a quikset that i have switched the pins around in many times to make it more challenging. (It didn't turn out to be that challenging) Could someone tell me where to get a couple of spools that I could drop in the quikset?

Yes a local locksmith should have tons of them.

And changing the pins arounds only changes the binding order which will be easy but spools willl give you a challenge.

Thanks, I will deffinately go to my locksmith tomorrow. I can't wait to get the feel for spools. (howeverlong it may take )

you can always look for a kwikset that advertises "pick resistant pins" - that way you can get a better feel for the spool pins, but not have to worry about too much of a challenge yet. Or of course you could always grab a Schlage lock - they too will state on the box if they have security pins. maybe something in the 300 series : they have spool pins, and a more challenging keyway. kinda fun locks in my opinon.

The only lock iv'e picked with spools is a Yale 6 pin Euro cylinder with 2 spools. Not that hard and i havnt yet to pick any other locks like my R70 Which is hard.
