1st Picking - Hard Lock??

Okay guys ever since I saw a video of lockpicking I've been hooked! I've been hooked on lockpicking and every possible knowledge of it I can fit into my skull. I don't have a pick but I'll go very soon, I'm going to this place it is like a small plaza with Subway, BurgerKing, etc. but it is like a booth thing where the will sell things associated with locks. My dad does not want me doing this at all, what-so-ever, I'm 17.5 if you're wondering. I asked him if he had a lock that he doesn't need and he gave me this one and it looks very hard I don't know what model it is because all I can describe to you is that is:
- it says "hardened" on it
- the only NUMBER it has is right above the keyhole and it says, "MASTER LOCK 0"

I've put some picks and am wondering if it is a lock I should try to pick, it looks hard but I knew you guys would for sure know whether or not I should try as a very, very new beginner. *Also very sorry for the poor quality of pics if they are really that bad and you need better I'll get my digital camera out, but you can distinguish the key hole.

well thats a Master padlock as it says on the lock as for picking u might want to sart with a easier one to pick but id say just try it if u pick well than thats great if u dont well then keep trying or get an easy doorknob or deadbolt [kwicksets are good starter ones]

Wow, thanks for the fast respone. Anyways I have a tension wrench (don't ask how I got it), but I'm just trying to at least try to do some kind of rack, don't know if I'm doing it right cause of course the lock is too strong. I guess I'll have better luck when I actually get my pickset. Thank you again.
Also can raking actually be done on this lock or will I only be able to actually pick it pin-by-pin? I'll try to pick up some easier locks too.

raking technechly could be done on that lock but when first sarting out i suggest that you try picking it first or get a lock that is easy so that u can feel the pins and be able to pick right

actually as far as padlocks go Master are the easier ones to pick. I've run into a couple of difficult cases, but for the most part Master locks open right up. I have both raked and pin picked them, so both techniques could potentially open it. Master brand is actually a good brand to start with.

yeha i recomend an easier lock first, and you should practice your pin by pin pibking before you rake so you get the tecnique and the feel on the pins.

no need to feel like an idiot at all! Kwikset knobs and deadbolts are also good starter locks. Master padlocks though are also good beginner locks as well.

Plus, you gave him sound advice by telling him to learn to pick it pin by pin. Raking a lock can be a game of luck, but pin picking will teach the skill of knowing when the pins set.

Actually if you jus starting buy a cut away, it wil show you everything inside the lock and what happens when diffrent things occur.. there a tad bit pricey around 40$ if i am not mistaken, but kwickset deadbolts and great for making cut aways heck i have seen some awsome cut aways on here see if anybody would make you one a little cheaper.
