New-b To Lockpicking Needs help!

Postby DogzoT » 3 May 2006 2:16

Hey all,

Im very new to lockpicking and I saw a video on making lockpicks and have made my own fairly desent pickset (Hook,Rake,Tension)
however I tried picking my room front door which is a lock inside the actual door knob and i can see the first golden pin thru the key slot.

Ive been trying for ages but cant get it! It seems that wenever I try pushing a pin up it wont "go in" and stay there, and I have to give less Tension to allow the pin to go up and stay up but when I do this the others fall back down!

Can somebody please help me?
Thanks in Advence :D

There’s loads of info on this subject if you search for it.
You’ll get a better response if you learn some of the basics first before asking, try viewtopic.php?t=10677&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight= as it is a good start point.

I will just add that a lock that’s fitted to your front door is not really the best one to start on, for a couple of reasons.

1. When you break it, and if you have only just started picking you might, you (and anyone else who’s door it is) will be less than pleased. You’ll be either locked in / our or your door can’t be locked.

2. The position of a lock in a door is quite a hard one to pick in and it’s a lot easier to learn in a more forgiving position, this is why a lot of hobby pickers like to use padlocks

it sounds to me like that the trouble pin binds eariler than the others and therefore should be set first with minimal tension. then find the next binding pin and so on...

am i missing something?

Krepts almost right, your just picking them in the wrong order, your trying to pick a pin that shouldnt be picked first,

Thanks all!

I did notice that the position of the lock wasn't the best but are padlocks generally the same layout Pin Tumbler locks as most doors? Or is there a catch??

(I also find it hard to pick padlocks as there are not fixed in they keep moving around and i need both hands to pick!)

And, So if i start at the very back and push them up there should be no binding problem??
It doesn't seem to be a trouble pin but all of them.
I really need a desent Tension Wrench as mine is a dodgy allen key! :?

I think you loose the point,

The way a lock is made means it can be picked, the reason this is is that the holes the pins sit in are never drilled perfectly in a straight line along the axis of the lock, what this means is that anyone of those pins can be the first one to set.

You put tension on the plug,

You push each pin up separately until one of them sticks up, if the first one sticks up you still try the others, if they all stick up you are putting too much tension on,

You tension the lock so only one pin binds at a time, once you have set that pin you then move on to the next pin to bind and so on.

A lock may bind in 1,3,2,5,4,6 or 2,6,1,5,3,4, or so on, you will rarely actually get a lock that does infact bind true as a 1,2,3,4,5,6, or 6,5,4,3,2,1, but on cheap locks you may get away with doing that.

Read the mit guide then read DB's guide on single pin picking.
