Which lock picking set?

Postby benson » 9 Jun 2006 13:43

Hey guys I'm new to lock picking, opened 2 different locks so far with stuff around the house. Now i'm looking to get some better tools. I will be (trying to) mainly open padlocks such as the ABUS brass padlocks.

I am considering something such as the "Eight Piece Standard Lock Pick Set" from http://www.locksmith-tools.co.uk/acatal ... Picks.html

Do you guys think that this kit will be ok to open the ABUS brass padlocks as well as some other locks. If not then what would you recommend?

Thanks :D

So the slimline 9 piece set will DEFINITELY be able to open ABUS brass padlocks (with a bit of practise lol)?
Are there any other common picks or anything else that a novice may need?

They will open a wide range of locks, yes.

Depends upon where you live, and what kind of locks you commonly find. If you're in the Uk then some lever picks would be handy etc...

Don't buy the simple lever picks by the way.

Read this to make them really easily:

I'm guessing you are from the UK since you were ordering from a UK site.

slimlines and abus padlocks

the slimlines work great on abus padlocks. i just busted a pair of abus 83/45 padlocks in about 10 minutes. very strange because i'd been working on them off and on (mostly off) for over a month with absolutely no progress. but today the stars must have been in the right place.

those picks you mentioned are southern ordnance picks and you might be able to get them cheaper directly from them rather than through a middleman.

Falle-Safe sawtooth rakes wreak havoc on the Abus Discus I've got.

My recommendation for a first pick set is the same for all who ask that question: the Peterson Government Elite Series 4 set--it is PERFECT for noobs, and contains all essential items with absolutely no frills whatsoever; if you can't afford it you need to stick to paper clips and safety pins, saving your wittle pennies, until you can.

(I was going to recommend the Falle-Safe set, but then I remembered that Peterson had something even more grossly expensive than that).

I'm working on getting a set of petersons from a guy I know (locksmith) - he is saying that he never uses them ever, likes to use a 5 or 6 peice set he made, and then laughs about it as his company paid for this huge peterson set. He does not do alot of picking though.

I had no idea they cost that much.
