WD-40, good or not good

Postby hacktoad » 13 Mar 2004 19:27

Hi to all,

I tried to pick for several hours a simple 4 pins padlock with no good result at all. Then I put some WD-40 in it, and I was able to open it like 10 times in about 20 minutes. Is it a good way to help someone to open a lock or it is just a n00b tool?

I'am just starting lockpicking so I wanna start the good way and not use some bad starting habits. Thanks

WD-40 makes a greese and makes the lock gummy so if you only want to pick it once then your good but silicone is a better lube IMO

not good. graphite is alot better, goto your hardware store and get a tube of it.

wd-40 gums up and becomes really nasty really fast...

People knock WD40 alot, I personally use Super Lube. But WD40 is a good lube, i know ALOT ALOT of 'smiths use it. Cost effective and it works.

But in australia you do not have to worry about the lube freezing. Also the best reason I heard not to use wd-40 was the reaction it has when mixed with graphite powder. But then again any liquid based lube would have this reaction. I know stuff all about this so i will go back in my box.

WD-40 does work though. In an emergency situation, its great!
Water-displacement-40th attempt. Its great for freeing rust and the like. But, you take out all the moisture, and the lock becomes dry. So after a while, the lock just becomes more suseptible(sp?) to weather. Thats why I'd say Silicone based lubricants are better.

But if you come across a rusted lock and you've got some WD-40, don't be hesitant to use it. It will help opening a padlock.
