What Lock?

Postby screamdudeguy » 14 Jun 2006 6:02

Even though I know that your not suppose to pick locks you rely on, i got board one day and picked all the locks to my house. I have a kwikset deadbolt and door knob in the front and in the back I have a no name brand deadbolt and door knob in the back. My dad saw how easy it was for me to pick those locks so he said we will upgrade the locks to more secure locks. Would locks would you recomment we get? We want to get good locks that aren't too expensive. Also, should i get a lock without security pins and add them to it or buy a lock that already has security pins? I have no idea what locks to get so could you please recommend deadbolts and door knobs that are hard to pick and their prices. Thanks

some of the schlage models aren't bad for pick resistance and lower prices, but you get what you pay for. remember though if somebody wants in they are getting in.

and the obligatory (although you acknowldeged it)

Tell your dad not to get too worried about it. Criminals almost *never* use picking as a means of entry. And beside that, unless you're prepared to go to something in a high security lock (Medeco, for example), and pay a whole whack of money for them, there's not a lot out there that will be enough better to justify the change-over.

Indeed, Schlage locks tend to be better, but they would rarely stop someone who is skilled at picking. Nor would security pins. Etc... etc.. etc..

Go tell your dad that I have cheap locks and an alarm system. Works for me. :)

The restaurant I work in (friends of mine owners/operators) was broken into twice last month, one time attempted in February - all three times did not have the finese nor skill or lockpicking involved - they tried to kick in the door once (iron bar across door stopped them), then they broke the front door twice (glass door, now has wire mesh glass in it).

Criminals want to get in and out in the shortest amount of time possible. The company that installed the alarm and camera at the restaurant says that they were probably in and out within 45 seconds.

if you get an alarm system shop around i got estamets between 10 dollars & 20 dollars a month with free equipment. dont be scared of the contracts. i got them to give me a two year deal every thing free and 15 a month and it was a top company. 15 a month is cheaper than geting a dog. if you rent get renters insurance about $200.00 a year and every thing is replaced.

just repin the locks you have if you are worried about picking.
and as a lockie i go to a lot of breakins and 95% of the time it's the frame that gives way so think about improving the strenth of the frame and door before you think about new locks

I've never seen a snapped bolt. Usually, if installed bad, the whole lock assembly will twist out of the door or the bolt will go through the frame.
