hey i was wondering, what is the best pick types? i made a hook type of pick but it had trouble getting into the keyway and moving freely, so which would be better, or what am i doing wrong.

here are the pick types i know of,
ball pick
dimond pick
deforest pick
hook pick

if any of you out there could tell me of anymore types of picks that you know could you please post theme here, with or without pictures. thanks

look at a key

Postby raimundo » 8 Jun 2006 8:04

if you look at a common key, I believe that a good pick is equal in height above the pick shaft that should be in the middle range of the cuts on the key, not equal to the deepest cut, because the pick will be thinner and able to manuver around in the keyway, while the key must be an exact fit.

pics

when posting pictures of piks, it would be a good practice to put a common key perhaps with some high and low cuts in the photo next to the pik to give a good idea of the relationship between a key that is made to fit exactly, and a pik that is made to work in the keyway with plenty of manuver room. A really common key that everyone would recognize would be the type to show.

yes Master Raimundo's pick design is nice, almost too nice though - I kinda don't want to pick pin by pin after using it. Joking aside, I use the rakes and stuff to see if the lock does open, is it pickable. Then I play around with the pin by pin. I started doing this after a friend of mine was complaining that I gave him bum locks, seized up locks or something that were unpickable just so I could see him get ticked off.
