help removing the tailpiece of a deadbolt

Postby phairdon » 19 Jun 2006 18:59

Hey, today I got a basic kwikset deadbolt 660 series. I am using illusion's guide to repin it so I can do the beginner's exercise but unlike in the guide, my lock has this shaft "tailpiece" thing in it. I've taken 2 pictures of it. How can I get this out without a cylinder removal tool? (The kwikset rekeying .pdf says to use a cylinder removal tool) I have a set of lockpicks and tried sticking a tension wrench in there but I don't know what to do. Any help would be appreciated!

You see the ring around the end of the plug? it should have a split in it, prise that apart with a small screwdriver then remove it, the tail piece should then fall out.

Dont over bend the ring, that holds the plug in and you will need to reuse it.
