having trouble finding the binding order

Postby omgxraycat » 24 Jun 2006 5:54

I am practicing on a few padlocks that I found in the garage. They're all 4-pin tumblers. Using a very slight amount of torque and my hook pick, I check the resistance of all pins using a prying motion. It seems like there are usually at least 2 pins binding at the same time. When I lift one to the shear line, the other 3 pins aren't binding at all! Even when I increase / decrease torque. How do you know which one is binding the most?

I think that's it anyways. It looks like this. I've gotten it open a few times through raking and luck...but I'm trying to actually know 100% sure what I'm doing...lol

Are you actually setting the pin?

If you are setting the pin and its not a security pin then you are setting the wrong pin first, set the other one first and go from there.

Theres loads of info on how to feel security pins but quickly if you are falsely setting one the pins then the plug will slightly rotate back again when you continue to press the pin you think youve set.

Well I've tried doing both pins. It doesn't seem to help. I've tried all different orders. I can't tell when to stop pushing the pins up. i don't know if I'm pushing them up too far or what. I just know whenever I release torque, i hear pins falling.

Have you read Db's single pin picking guide? have you thought about re-pinning the lock following the guide illusion or SJ wrote? (depending on lock type),

Sounds like you need to pin it to 2 pins then work your way up.

is it possible to take apart a padlock? I was going to go out and buy a deadbolt so I could do that, but I am pretty broke right now.

Well its been made so its possable to un-make it, whether it works again depends on what type of padlock it is,

If its a god one there may be a grub screw or such like down the shackle hole if its a cheapy brass one you will do well to look for illusions guide on pulling one apart.

What man can make, man can break.
