where can i find locks?

i just ordered a 14 piece lock pick set =)

i was wondering where i can get started on locks.. i have a masterlock and my mothers room which is a deadbolt. but i want a lock not attached to something so i can take it apart and maybe cut it in half so i see the pins move up when i pick it.

i cant really find anything on this but how would i know which pick i would use for each kind of lock?

First the obligatory DON'T PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON...I know from expierence and so do many others you don't want to have to by another cause you F*cked it up.

Go to your local mal-mart or hardware store and buy a couple of cheap locks to start out with. Pick up something like a master no3 its pretty easy and cheap

Know which picks to use is a personal thing most here swear by a hook for single pin picking but try every pick out and see which you like. Note that the sharp spear looking one is a broken key extractor

another place you can find locks is at discount/ dollar stores! (really, a few dollar stores near me sells deadbolts, normal door locks, etc)

cut some wood, and mount the deadbolts, door locks side by side, or one above the other, thats what I first did years ago.

Ebay will be one of your best places for practise locks.

keep your eyes open for yard sales and check surplus stores

My personal favorite is the goodwill/ salvation army/ thrift stores......

ask for locks that they have no keys for .... Don't let them charge you much .. there is not a long line of people wanting locks without keys, matter of fact I would be willing to bet you are the only one this year asking for "key less locks".

Go down to your local gym or swimming pool and ask them what they do with the abandoned locks on lockers. Typically, they just cut the shackle and throw them out. If you ask nice, they may save them for you. A cut padlock is still good for practice.

This is a good tip. Contact demolition companies. I had the unique opportunity to salvage a whole box of cylinders from the old Winnipeg Arena before they tore it down. Here's the post I made about it.
