buying blanks by the box

Postby raimundo » 13 Apr 2006 12:48

best place to buy a box of blanks is here on the internet. possibly even from one of the sponsors of the site, see adds in the marginalia, but shop for price on google.

Yes, uninformed people are fun to mess with.

You should go and ask that dude at lowes how much he's willin to bet the master lock is pick proof. easy money!

I went to lowes awhile ago and had 2 copies of the key to my car made. The dude was nice, found the blanks, copied em', took em out, compaired em to the origonal and said QUOTE "Looks about right. When you get home, make sure both these keys work. Sometimes this think doesent cut quite right."

WOW! Thats crappy! At least the guy is honest though.

I also bought a small "puffer" container of graphite while i was there. I almost started laughing when i read the back of the package "Use frequently to keep locks working smooth" How often is frequently?... I can see the rednecks here using it every week.

Ahh Lowes and Home Depot... what you all need to remember is the people working in these places are not professionals and have just a minor interest if any in what they are doing.

When I applied to my local Lowes for a job they said I had too much experience in the HVAC field to even think of hiring me. In other words they new I would not lie to a customer and would send them to a reputable contractor or supply house for what they really needed.

Big box stores have a tendency to come in and drive out the small guys who do know what they are doing then supply the general public with substandard supplies. Remember they are buying there product from their suppliers at the lowest possible price to make the largest profit.

Now I am not condemning these stores as they are providing a couple of good services.

a. they do have fairly low prices on goods
b. they are selling to the do it yourselfer who otherwise would normally have a very hard time finding and buying some of those goods.

Big box stores are just that "sell it to em in a big box and they will be happy".

BTW you can find some good things some times such as your 999 key and I was able to score a bunch of free pins for rekeying. Just have to look at them for what they are and move on. Oh and yeah you probably would be better off trying to get on with a good locksmith in your area you would not only be able to use your existing skills but probably get quite a few more.

I can't stand going into Home Despot, Rona or Lowes - I've only been in a Lowes state-side of the border and I do admit the service industry in Michigan rules over any Ontario store. BUT we are getting Lowes in Canada soon, maybe things will improve. Canadian Tire completely lives up to the Crappy Tire name now. BUT all of these places have their employee picks I think from the people who failed shop courses.

I went into Home Despot on monday looking for Plasti-Dip, I have a 5 pick set completed and wanted to cover the handles, I had to end up using shrink tube - which is great, but its not what I wanted to play with. The clown working in the electrical dept. told me to go to tools, the clown in tools said he had no idea what I was talking about and that I should ask one of the older guys working here as they may heard about it because they were alive longer than he was (seriously, this is what came out of this shaved monkey's mouth) and maybe more experienced?? - I'm looking at getting an account at a mail order supplier (ackland-grangier) so I can just order from them and not have to interact with complete monkeys when I go to purchase tools and things.

My Mom made the suggestion the other day that maybe I should apply there so that they would have knowledgable (sp) people working their - and that my dad should also, My dad said that he would go on the dole/welfare before he worked at a place like that.

Hehe LockNewbie21, I was sure your story was going to end something like this...

"So I asked him about a good lock, and he suggested Kwikset and Master Lock #5... I said I'd return with a key I needed copied. I came back a half-hour later and asked the manager to show me those locks again. He lead me to the check-out where I bought them, and I proceeded to ask if I could amuse him for a few moments of his time. We went back to his office, and I pulled out my lockpicks and picked the Kwikset in 15 seconds. His jaw dropped, and I grabbed for the #5 and picked it in 25 seconds. He grunted and took a long drink from his coffee. He asked if I wouldn't mind managing the department because one of the managers recently transfered to another city. I start Monday at $11/hour!"

I guess that's just my imagination at work. :)
