Book safes?

Postby taylorgdl » 4 Jul 2006 11:47

You know the sort of thing I'm thinking of.

The Hardback book with the hollowed out centre to put stuff in.

Well, I'm trying to make a better one (who said mousetrap?) with a lock etc

So my question is this . . .

How to hold the pages still enough to make an even cut all the way through.

And what to cut the book with.

I intend lining the inside with either a wood or metal frame, to allow the cut pages to be hidden, and to fit the lock to. Will also line the inside with felt.

I know you can buy books like this fairly cheaply, but they're not very good, and they don't have a lock on them.

Any thoughts ?

I did this once.

I used a hard-back book, and used wood-glue to stick the pages together, leaving the edges of the pages to make it look real. This took a while to do, since the book was quite thick.

I used a sharp hobby knife to cut the recess, and just butchered untill I had what I wanted.

Hmm... I guess you could get a small 2 lever lock in there - SKS sell them. SP.434 my catalogue says. :)

Am using a small 4 lever cabinet hook lock from duffels.

I've tried clamping the book and cutting, but its a bit of a mess.

Just a few suggestions off the top of my head.

Depending on the weight of what you want to put in the book you could add some weight to it so it still feels like a real book.

As for the lock, I think it would be neat if you used a magnetic latch of some sort. The idea being if you hold a magnet in a certain spot or drug it along a certain area it would release a latch. Maybe even use this as a secondary lock.

Make a template out of heavy cardboard or something else fairly thick for the size hole you want in the book. You will also want a Xacto knife or other sharp razor type blade. Place the template on the page you want cut. Cut a few pages at a time until you get the depth you want. I hope your not destroying a good book for this project.

Put a piece of wood either side and clamp them together hard, then drill the corners and jigsaw the edges,

The thickness of books nowadays means that you will have to use an old one and the old ones are crinimal to cut up, why not by one from sks or where ever and just upgrade the locks?

Never done this before but I was just thinking, as said before is to glue the pages (white glue would be better), but not the whole page just the area you are not going to cut out. Then get a dremal if possible or a hobby knife and cut the pages out, make a template so it won’t take as long to cut out. Remeber you book has to be glued or you stuff will just fall out.

i've made a couple of these book safes
the first thing i do is
decide what size object i wish to hide
and then find a container/holder to hold that item
for example - lets say a cigarette box - 1/2 inch thick
find a book - say 8 x 5 inches - 2 inches thick
make a template from cardboard/thick plastic
with an outline slightly larger than the box
( now for the patience part )
starting at page 50 (?)
use an exacto knife to cut out each page
cut enough pages until you can easily
place the box completely into the book
now - holding the template at the top of the hole
use a spray paint to coat the inside of the hole
this will hold the pages together
and the outside pages will still look natural
let the paint dry and put the cigarette box inside
now you can put this book safe on a table
open the cover and flip thru the first few pages

book safe ? – this is a real book
