I'm working on FB lesson 22.

Are there any recommendations to help see the pin marks when trying to impression?

In an earlier lesson they had me smoke (or use a marker) to see the marks. does anyone know why they don't have us do this for this type of key? The earlier lesson was for warded locks.

The pins would rub off any marker or smoke while inserting the key.

when preparing your blank, olny fire in the direction that cuts. The spots you need to file will be shiney(ish) while the rust will be kinda scuffed up. Sliding the file the way that doesent cut will shine your blank making it harder to tell where the pin is.

Have a read of This Varjeal is very good and took the time to write a very good guide on the subject of impressioning, theres no point in me re-typing whats already said on there regarding knife edgeing,

Impressioning is fun and absolutly stunning when you get the knack of it, its somthing i admit i need more practice in and i keep meaning to do that soon as i love the princibles of it,

I did it! It "ain't" purty but it works.

I couldn't, for the life of me see the marks...so I tried it with a felt marker. and that did show up. I need a lot more practice. But I did make it work!

do you think knife edging is the best way. i must of did something wrong it seemed harder to see the marks. but i didnt read varjeal's yet it was a small ebook i downloaded some where.

Knife edge for wafer locks, use markers or smoke for pin types if it helps you. I prefer to change the light, if you can't see the mark in direct light try reflected light or even flashlights with different types of bulbs. I carry flaslights with L E D's, krypton, and hallogen bulbs for that purpose

those lights they sell that hook on your ear are they any good.

I've seen them but I don't have one,I do have a headband that I can fit the flashlights into. To impression I will position the light source so that it shines towards me and I use the key to refect the light up to my eye
