Oh, and whoever equated cracking with reverse engineering -- one of us is unclear on what reverse engineering is. I always understood it to be inductive engineering, working from a finished product and ending up with how to create that finished product. Am I wrong?

Erm, that was me. Maybe not the correct choice of words, but then again, they aren't my own. The reverse engineering term came from notes written on cracking that I'd read a few moons ago. I do quite a lot of reading on different subjects as I tend to become bored easily with most of my 'projects'. Having said that, lock picking is something that I'm going to stick with. Unlike my 1/2 finished robotics & electronics projects.......

hacking got me my current job...

Obviously WhiteHat, you're an ethical hacker, good on you!!

My interest in cracking was inspired by wanting to remove a niggling password prompt from a program that I own and use for work. Once I understood what to do (reverse a jump), I haven't bothered with cracking since!!

from whitehats name I could tell, whitehas is what I am also, you do it for knowledge, and him being a lockpicking forum and also hacking you can tell that he only does it for the knowledge and it being rewarding, for I basically do the same thing. I never did like cracking, or pick guns, (im not a locksmith and I do it for fun). hacking I think is not wrong at all. Its like lock picking (as we all proved a bunch heh) most us here (hopefully) are just doing this as a hobby, but if you go around to a random person and say I can pick the lock on your front door in less than 5 minutes, he will think your a robber. basically my point is it all matters how you use what you are doing. I for one admit I can hack, very horribly and im a n00b but I can do it. I will teach a person if I know what their intent of it is. Now why does hacking have a bad name (and lock picking too) is because when you hear about hacking, you hear about them cracking major websites and causing instustries millions of dollers, not much about them making websites secure and doing it as a hobby. Lock picking is hated because it CAN be used as a method of breaking in. this is a horrible way of looking at things, and sense we all lockpick here (or try at least) we all seem very open minded to hackers.

yep
