Anyone thought about useing the mul-t-lock blue print except maybe double the number of pins so you have 2 rows of 5 pin in pin and then each stack has the design eric suggested to get around the normal one implimented and then also each stack has medeco style pins whereby they need to be turned before they can be set properly, also the inner pins could be made to turn the opposite way to the outer pins.

Key duplication could be a job and a half but it would be possable to make a machine.

It would probably be broken at some point but sounds feasible to withstand picking techniques as we know them today.

it sounds feasible, but having the inner and outer pins at different angles would be a pain to cut keys for....

so Medeco style chisel pins and a sidebar, coupled with the telescopic pins of a Mul-T-Lock... sounds like it will be picked open, but it will require at the very least a huge investment of time to achieve.

so it's the dimple-lock type keyway and key then?

Well yes but quite how you would rotate the inner pins one way only to then need to turn the outer pins the opposite way is going to be one mean picking feat.

The idea is that there could have a door knob where couple of turns would crank up enough electric current to activate and fill up it's capacitors for unlocking mechanism. A green status light would indicate when to start the insertion of correct change for unlocking.

this has actually been done before. i cant remember the name of the lock offhand but its a digital combination lock that powers up by the rotation of the knob for a few minutes. since it has no moving parts there are no sounds when it gets to significant numbers, and there is a lcd readout on the instde that says the number of failed attempts. it was mentioned around here a few months ago, but i cant find the thread. looks pretty cool for a grand or 2 USD

A few years ago I was designing a security system just as a stupid project, and I thought through a few ways to set up a keypad lock. One idea I had, which I don't know of any locks that actually do this, was that the combination would be a sequence of buttons that could contain simultaneous button presses as part of the sequence.

As an example, you could have an ordinary number pad, but the combination would go like 3, 5, 2&4, 1&3&9, enter. The lock would have a threshold of something like 100ms for all keys to be pressed simultaneously. More bizarre combinations might have something where a button (or buttons) would have to be held down at multiple points. For example, 4, 5&6, 6&8, enter, where when transitioning between 5&6 and 6&8 you would have to keep the 6 pressed down.

If you wanted to be real far out, you could replace the number pad with a keyboard and have a musical lock! Although if the lock actually played the notes, any pianist would know your combination.

Omikron,

Can I purchase a Keybump from you? What is the price and the process? I tried your website (www.keybump.com), but they don't seem to be for sale there yet.

Thanks!

Most simplex locks have the option of simultaneous button presses in the comibnation, but this feature isn't used too often. Also, you may set half-steps where you only push a button halfway in, and these are even more rare.
