Un-bumpable lock

Postby bumpit » 16 Sep 2006 16:39

Hi I have been doing lots of research on bump keys and lock picking and I realized how easy it is to open every door on my block. I asked the locksmith how much a Mortise would cost to put on my door and it would be over 300$ :x That is way to much I have a Dexter on right now and he also said I could put a high security cylinder on there too but it was also 80$. Do you have any cheap ways of getting an Un-bumpable lock or should I just put on a different kind of lock such as a Kiwi or something incase the burglar only has a Dexter. He could still use a snap gun or and other things though it is brutal..... I was also wondering if anyone here is from Canada and is able to help me with starting to learn to become and locksmith and how I could get my hands on a good lock picking set. I made a lock pick from a hacksaw blade, it looks good but the end may be a little large :? It seems a little big. I know these are lots of questions so thank you to anyone who replies.

you sound worried about burglars.

dont. no burglar has the brains to use covert techniques like lockpicking to break into homes and steal things. they simply cant handle the brain function at that level. plus, any home with a security system is cool too.

and plus, bumpkeys require at least the adequate intelligence of a monkey to make and use. and lets face it, todays burglars are more interested in bricks. and thermite! MUAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH!

really though, no burglar uses stealth, cept to smash your window.

Speaking in absolutes will make a liar out of you. It's rare but it happens.

Considerations for residential use(reasons why I haven't pushed my parents to go high security):

-High security locks can make lockouts more expensive.

-There is a low probability that a high security lock's NDE resistance will ever serve as an obstacle in a burglary.

-High security locks beg the question "What are you protecting?" and could draw unwanted attention to your house.

-How often do you loan out your keys to merit key control?

-Could your insurance company use it as an excuse not to pay out in the event of an NDE?[/list]

Very good reasons but it still makes you feel un-easy when we go on long trips. I just bought a Tri-Circle 266 to pick for my first picking experience. I was not sure if it had security pins or not :? Also any ideas on lockpicks tools and such.

if you have a high security key, unless you go the factory-controlled route, you should also have a locksmith with your cuts somewhere on file, which negates this point entirely.

For the most part yes, but it's not a given that such an upgrade is made through a local locksmith. It's also more likely to be an issue when the potential locked out owner chose his locks based on suggestions from an internet message board. Enough potential to merit a can I think. Which brings us back to my original point. Weasel-words can save you from ever being wrong. :)

How did you check out the whole block? Did you just pick you own lock and then assume that all the locks are like yours because they look the same? Keep in mind that they could be different inside. Also - that was NOT an advise for you to run out and pick you neighbors locks - only pick your own.

But as already mentioned - most burglars won't try to pick your lock - they will find other ways of entry. But then again if your lock is VERY old it might encourage criminal minds to try to go through it. What kind of lock is the standard on your block. Make, number of pins, any spool pins and more?

I thought the same stinger at first but i guess hes just noticed that they all use cylinders,

What you have to be cvareful of is that is the appartment yours or do you rent? if you rent you may find its masterkeyed or if nothing else you cant change or modify it,

Make sure with the owner first if this is the case,

If your worried about burglary, the number one deterrent is a security system, not the lock! It doesn't matter if you have a $10 lock or a $300 lock, they both bust open about the same when the door is kicked in.

However a sign or sticker on your doors that indicates you have a security system will be more effective. Most burglars will simply go to the next house. You can buy security signs and stickers on ebay.

This technique will only be effective for reducing your chances of being burglarized from complete strangers. Any one who knows you don't really have a security system can still break in. If your really worried about it I suggest getting a very basic and cheap security system. If you have ADT in Canada you can get hooked up for under $100. Check out your yellow pages.

I just went around to my friends houses and tried my Dextor house key on them and they all fit. I don't live in an apartment I live in a house. The houses were all built in 1993. I can not see any marking's on the lock to give me any more info. I just started with this and I have lots to learn but I will get there. I have a security sticker that is fine for now.
