Need elp with making bump key

Ok so I saw a video of a 11 year old opening a lock with a bumpkey and wanted to try it so i bought the cheapest lock i could find and then filed away one of the keys into the shape some thing said it should be, anyway it doesn't work and I want to know if it's because the key I made is no good or if I am just doing it wrong.

Here's the key I made and one of the originals:


Do I have to file it better or what?

Great! Another newbie with his first post being about bump key making!!!

You need to file a bit off the shoulder and a bit off the tip.

But if you cant find the search button (top right) then scroll down the main Got Questions page and every other post is asking about these things. I am sure all you seek will be contained within one of those posts.

I tried searching first but found nothing. Which makes sense seeing as no one else has made a key exactly like mine.

From the looks of it, you filed WAY too low, at least from what I can tell

That one cut on your key was the lowest most likely, or second to lowest... you dont need to file into warding.

I've compiled a really quick look of both the original key, your files and then the "actual file".

The key is yours, the Red is an exact trace of how you filed it, the Green is my best guess at what works for that lock.

I'm new to bumping as well and I have the exact same key brand as you (Lane). I've posted on another forum but haven't gotten any responses so far.

I have taken some metal off the tip and the shoulder.

I've tried pull-back method where I put the key in the lock and then pull out one click and then apply a little bit of pressure on the key to turn and hit the key and the minimal-movement method but neither seem to work.

Once I hit the key and it doesn't open, I rotate it to the opposite side and I think I can hear a few pins dropping down ?

Well you dont have to lable the keys original and bump because we can tell the difference unless the key is horrible. Best bet is to buy some perfect keys of ebay. I did this and took a little off the shoulder and tip and I was in business. Blank key is 2$ I got 7 bump keys pre-made for 30$ which saves me time and effort. I then made another set at home depo for 14 bucks. Good investment in my opinion I helped people get into locks and made almost all my money back.

When making a bumpkey, you should try keep the flat bit which the pin will sit on the same size; just lower. It's best to make the cut alittle deeper than 9, say 9.5 or 10.
Your key looks like the teeth are too high, and the flat bit of the valley is too narrow.
Bumping is over rated. The videos you see are pro locksmiths trying to scare people into purchasing expensive bump proof locks. I've purchased bump keys from ebay, and made them aswell; they work for awhile but wear out pretty quickly. picking is alot easier than bumping.

I made the grooves a little deeper and made the teeth lower as well. I kept trying and thought it would never work, but it worked . Thanks for your help . Now lets see if I can make it work a second time...

I've now opened the lock about 20 or so times using the one click back method and only 4 times using the minimal-movement method.
