I'll have a set of 9 Depth Keys from Ebay in a day or so. I was thinking I can make them into bump keys with a bit of modification. Am I right, or did I waste my money?

I did a bunch of searching on the forums here and I found out a good bit about bump keys, but not the difference between them and depth keys.

And yes. I'm a newbie. If it's any consolation I should have a South Ord PXS-14 pick set tomorrow also. I'm not planing on just being just a bumpaholic.. - Joe

Hi Joe I too just got my 7 bump keys from e-bay. I got them all copied at my hardware store. I now have a master copy and a copy to BUMP with. Grind 0.5mm to 1mm off the shoulder and tip and they should work fine.

I had read something like that someplace (not here) before I ordered. Then after I placed the order I started looking at cylinders and pins and wondering if they would be ok. Thanks a lot! I'll be more excited to get my pick set though. Opening locks is kewl, but I want to be able to set pins one at a time and be able to pick something more than my nose. I can already bump my nose...:) I bought a quickset lock to practice on. And that little slot looks sooo small! I can't wait to get picks and see if I'm up to the challenge. The exersise of starting with 1 pin, then 2, then 3, etc. looks like fun. - Joe
