sizing?

Postby berky93 » 23 Oct 2006 22:00

i ahve been trying to make my own picks for quite a while. i finally found a perfect object to use (it already has a plastic handle and a metal shaft) but my printer broke. so now i can't print out templates. i know the shape of the pick im trying to make (im trying to make a medium sized hook) but i don't know the size specifications. can anyone tell me?

You can judge the size of a pick well by simply putting it next to a key,

If you look at the templates on site you will see most have a ruler on them this can be used to tell you the size,

Who's medium size hook? You ask 6 people to show you their favorite medium size hook pick, and they'll probably pull out 6 picks of slightly to wildly differenet sizes.

For example. My PXS-14 pick set came with a fairly standard medium hook. But there is no way I'd waste my time copying it. I'd want to change it some and make it a perfect hook pick for my style of picking.

Why don't you just grind out a bunch of cheapo hacksaw blades into slightly different hooks. Then see what works well for you. Then grind out your plastic handled masterpice to the size that works best for you?

Joe makes a very good point. There are slight variations from most of the pick set brands you find on sale. Some where I posted a pic side by side comparison of the small hooks from some of the popular manufacturers.

Some sets even include a large variety of hooks beyond small med and large, like the Dino Navagater set that has 7 different hooks!

I would simply look at what they look like and use your key as Shrub suggested to get you in the keyway and follow Joes advice and make some variations. I've been making my own home made hooks too. I actually prefer my own which differ slightly. In short you will probably need at least a couple of hooks. I prefer the smaller slimmer design on the line of Peterson and Majestic.
