A few questions regarding euro cylinders

Postby fusion » 28 Nov 2006 0:37

After succesfully picking a few pin tumbler padlocks, I've moved on to cylinders.
I found some old locks in my garage (cca 2-15 years old), 10 padlocks both US and Euro types and about 20 Eurocyl.
The cylinders that look older are easier to pick with the new picks (pic 1) I made, weird thing is that it's easier to find the shear line using the raking technique when I turn (the wrench) to the left, than to the right. Is there a reason for this? (pic 2)
Also, the "newer" cylinders have a more complicated keyway and it's hard to work with the rake or any other pick in there. Any tricks for that?
Thanks in advance for any info!

the only deferance is the binding order and you. try spp the lock, not all locks can be raked open

Thanks for the reply iNtago.
I found out that I was picking a lock with "I" pins (forgot the correct term) after I took one side apart.
But on the other side, picking to the left is really easy and I cant open it turning right :?
Which pick is usually used for euros? Everyone probably has their own favorite, but what is most common?

Oh, and has anyone made a homemade "spinner"? I saw them being sold at lockpics.com I think. What I have in mind is to open, turn a bit a then spin fast to the other side.

Btw: I also found out that the lock is probably "higher safety" not only because of the pins, but it also has a pin in the upper center, which has to be depressed by the key to turn. I just made a longer tension wrench for that.

Spool pins?

Sometimes the lock needs some lube to turn the other side. Slimlines are great for euros. I like the short hook most.
