Number of possible keys for a wafer/minibar lock?

Postby Knowthebird » 3 Dec 2006 6:43

Hie. I read some where recently that some cheap locks have a relativly small amount of possible keys, somewhere around 100 to 20. I think they were refering to cabinet/furniture locks.

I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how many possible keys there are for the Diebold Accuvote machine. All I know is that it uses a cheap wafer/minibar lock.

One of the members here assumed/guesed it was "a 3 wafer lock or something equally crappy", if that helps at all.

Also, this is what the keys look like:

This has really got my curiosity.
Thanks for any and all info,
Ross K.

He's asking how many possible key combinations there are for wafer locks, which seems to be a reasonable. Looks like 5 wafers to me.

Thats sort of rite. So, If a lock uses 5 wafers how many different combinations of keys can it have.

Also, Is it reasonable to assume somebody could make a key identical to the ones in the pictures using only those pictures?

Instacode shows 4 depths for that key (national wafer) 4 to the 5th power =1024 POSSIBILITYS

They list about 600 different codes.. some can't/ shouldn't be used because of MACS or other reasons.

Well if there're 6 different possible wafer heights, for 5 wafers in the cylinder, there would be 6*6*6*6*6=7776 possible key combinations. If there were 7 possible heights, that would be 16807 keys. It depends on the lock.

I think it's quite obvious that if you know what something looks like, and have the skill and equipment, you can make something similar to it.

Like UWSDWF, I'm starting to wonder too, although I can't see you being able to do anything much with this knowledge.

Yes and if it had to be that secure WHY would they use a NATIONAL wafer lock ? obviously "they" don't see it as an issue.
